It’s almost 5:00 PM. You’ve been staring at your screen since morning, your shoulders are tight, and suddenly, you feel that familiar itch; the urge to lean back and rub your eyes.
If you’ve done this today, don’t worry. You aren’t alone. In our digital-first world, “tired eyes” have become the new normal. But just because it’s common doesn’t mean you have to live with that gritty, strained feeling every single day.
As someone who cares about your vision, I want to pull back the curtain on why this happens and give you a few simple, no-nonsense ways to give your eyes the break they deserve.
Why do your eyes feel like they’re “giving up”?
Think of your eyes like a camera lens. When you’re looking at a phone or a laptop, your eyes are working to stay in focus on a target only a few feet away, hour after hour, especially if you around or over the age 40 years. Unlike our ancestors, who spent their days looking at distant horizons, we spend ours in a constant state of “near-focus.”
Essentially, your eye muscles are running a marathon, but they never get to cross the finish line.
Three ways to reset today
You don’t need fancy gadgets or expensive supplements to start feeling better. Try these three small shifts:
- The “Blink Break”: Did you know we blink 60% less when looking at screens? That’s why your eyes feel dry and gritty. Make a conscious effort to blink fully and frequently. It’s like a tiny windshield wiper for your vision.
- The 20-20-20 Rule (Made simple): You’ve probably heard this one a million times by now, but let’s make it practical. Every 20 minutes, look at something at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Don’t worry about the timer, it is a principle, just pick a landmark in the room, like a door or a picture on the wall, and let your eyes “rest” there for a few breaths.
- Adjust Your Light, Not Just Your Screen: Often, it’s not the screen that’s the problem, it’s the glare around the screen. If your computer is the brightest thing in a dark room, your eyes have to work overtime. Try to balance your room lighting so your screen isn’t competing with the shadows.
Let’s have a conversation
I know there is a lot of confusing information out there. One day you hear that blue light is the enemy; the next day you’re told it’s fine. It can be overwhelming to know what’s actually true and what’s just clever marketing.
